Water for the EMSEZ megaproject at all costs
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung South Africa commissioned the research, building on an initial report published in May 2020 “Water risks of fossil fuel mega projects in Limpopo: the MCWAP and the EMSEZ”, to investigate the governance of water in the Limpopo River catchment, both within the South Africa - particularly sub-catchments in which one or more dams are proposed to support the Electro-Minerals component of the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ) - and amongst the four riparian countries: South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The report includes a summation of expert analysis of a Pre-feasibility Study for a proposed big dam project to store Limpopo River floodwaters, seeking to supply more than 90% of the water for the minerals-industrial complex (to include a coal-fired power station and various steel and related industries).
