A New Social Contract for South Africa

The Wits School of Governance in partnership with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung South Africa invites you to a public dialogue focusing on debating and envisioning a new social contract for South Africa. This dialogue marks the culmination of a year -long project and will unpack key contestations regarding the economy, sustainability, spitial transformation and the new role of youth and civil society in order to begin envisioning an agenda that all sectors in society can rally around.

South Africa faces severe development challenges and the limited gains in achieving social justice and equitable development have led to growing calls for transformation. These calls are for strategies that go beyond incremental, business-as-usual responses, and that look to transform the systems, institutions and cultural norms that created these challenges and which underpin the institutions of state and society. The creation of a just and inclusive social contract will require challenging the status quo and developing innovative strategies to address underlying structural causes of vulnerability and inequality.
