Towards a Decent Standard of Living Conference
The Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute (SPII) in partnership with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung South Africa hosted a two days Colloquium on "A Decent Standard of Living"#qualityoflife from 26 to 27 September 2016 at The Parktonian Hotel.
The first day discussions aimed at establishing the legal and political imperatives of the aspiration to introduce a decent standard of living for ALL, as well as providing opportunity for initial outlining the potential standards of the elements of an ADEQUATE standard of living as set out by the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
The second day discussions were on consider sources of financing for the achievement of a Decent Standard of Living for all in South Africa, considering a combination of labour wages and tax- based social protection including social protection and the full elements of the social wage.
The South African National Development Plan 2030 too makes specific reference to the attainment of a decent standard of living for all in South Africa as a central pillar to its vision.
