Reimagining democracy for just and equitable futures

The Women in Local Government Leadership Masterclass brought together women leaders and emerging public leaders for a critical conversation on leadership, gender equality and the future of democratic governance.

Hosted by OR Tambo School in partnership with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) South Africa, the first session launched a masterclass series focused on strengthening ethical, resilient and socially responsive leadership.

The discussion highlighted that women’s leadership should not depend on exceptional persistence. Across public institutions, women continue to navigate structural barriers while contributing to meaningful change. Advancing gender equality therefore requires more than representation; it requires mentorship, sponsorship, practical leadership development and sustained institutional support.

Participants also reflected on the need to broaden conventional understandings of leadership. Women should not have to conform to traditional leadership models to succeed. Their experiences, perspectives and approaches can strengthen governance, deepen democratic participation and contribute to better public outcomes.

Grounded in the belief that education and political learning are essential to democratic participation and social progress, the masterclass series seeks to equip current and emerging leaders with the knowledge, skills and networks needed to contribute to more just and equitable futures.

The Masterclass Sessions provide expert-driven spaces for policymakers, activists, researchers and sector leaders to deepen their understanding of key social and economic challenges while strengthening ethical and effective leadership. The series will continue to create spaces for reflection, learning and leadership development around the defining challenges facing society and local government.
