Fort Hare Autumn School Alumni

Founded in 2016, the Fort Hare Autumn School (FHAS) Alumni Network unites all students and graduates of the FHAS Programme. Over one hundred students have graduated from the FHAS, thereby advancing their understanding of Social Democracy as well as their leadership capabilities. The FHAS Alumni Network addresses the need to establish a closer link among the Alumni and with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) South Africa. It provides a platform for progressive young South African leaders to build networks for intellectual and career-related exchange. 

Internship Opportunity (x2) | 2025

Fort Hare Activist School Alumni network in partnership with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung South Africa facilitates internship opportunities for FHAS alumni with completed Master’s degrees at FES partner organisations in Johannesburg. The internship programme provides FHAS alumni a pathway to the world of work in civil society, social justice sector, think tanks and progressive research organisations.  Two positions are available:

MISTRA is an independent think tank that takes a long-term view of the strategic challenges facing South Africa, the continent, and the globe.

Educational background: economics, development, sociology, political science or related.

Internship focus: 
The internship will focus on four projects: The Future of Democracy, Geopolitics, the Local Developmental State in Rebuilding Economies and the Burden of Disease in the Post-Covid-19 World. 

IEJ is a progressive economic policy think tank that advances economic justice, systemic change and the equitable distribution of resources to ensure rights realisation and planetary wellbeing.

Educational background: economics, development, sociology, political science, or related

Internship focus
The intern will work at IEJ on one of the following focus areas, depending on their existing skills and knowledge base, and the needs of the organisation

The Board

The FHAS Board has been established to serve as an official medium for communication between the alumni. It aims to increase awareness of FHAS as a leadership programme of excellence. The Alumni Board also recognizes and celebrates alumni achievement, and it helps ensure that appropriate resources and programs exist to further enrich the FHAS alumni experience.

Alumni Board Objectives

In light of this mission, our key objectives are to:

  • to create a platform which facilitates support and communication between the FHAS scholars,
  • to create spaces for dialogue and facilitates the activism of individual members,
  • to support projects which advance the realization of the vision.
  • to engage with FES and FHAS and to support the development and advancement of the FHAS programme.
