What do we fight for together?

Celebrating collective wins and 100 years of FES

The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Johannesburg marked #FES100 years of advancing social democracy, progressive internationalism, and international solidarity in a talk show with lots of feeling and imagination. Together with our friends and partners, we reflected on how hope, dreams and visions of a better tomorrow can give us strength for the struggles ahead.

We explored the power of collective imagination, the resilience of progressive movements, and the strength found in solidarity across borders. What emerged was not only a celebration of past victories, but a recognition that the struggles for a just society remain.

For 100 years, FES has stood alongside labour movements, civil society, political activists, and democratic forces, rooted in the belief that social justice is a global imperative. In South Africa, this history is intertwined with the fight against apartheid, the quest for economic justice, and today’s struggles for climate justice, gender equality, and democratic accountability.

We also mark a moment of transition. We bid farewell to Uta Dirksen and Sebastian Sperling, whose leadership has deepened our political work and widened the reach of our solidarity. We welcome Kathrin Meissner as the new Director of FES South Africa.

We extend our gratitude to our partners, allies, and friends for their continued support and invite you to join us in welcoming Kathrin Meissner. Together, we remain committed to advancing a just, democratic, and equitable society.
