WEB-SEMINAR-Protests 2021: What is this?

Since the arrest of Jacob Zuma, the former president of South Africa (on July 9, 2021), parts of the country have been engulfed in a series of destructive protests – mainly looting of businesses and shopping malls.

The University of Fort Hare (Department of Sociology and Anthropology), in partnership with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung South Africa (FES-SA) warmly invites you to a web-seminar under the title 'Protests 2021: What is this?'

Since the arrest of Jacob Zuma, the former president of South Africa (on July 9, 2021), parts of the country have been engulfed in a series of destructive protests – mainly looting of businesses and shopping malls. The scale of destruction to property and goods is unprecedented, since the dawn of democracy. The socio-economic impacts will be devastating. Are these, in fact, protests by the loyal supporters of the embattled former president who are agitating for his release, or are we
witnessing a coincidental historical moment of food uprisings by the poor in the middle of a global pandemic? What is this? This is a critical moment to reflect.

This event is part of the popular Fort Hare Friday Seminar Series.
