[WEB SEMINAR] KILLING THE NATION – A QUEER ANALYSIS ON VIOLENCE

This is not another GBV talk. We have been here before, and the results have been the same. This time we take a different turn. This seminar looked at violence through black feminist traditions; unpacking the activist stance “they will never kill us all”; and offer a black queer reading on the notion “overkill”. In a context where to be black, gay, lesbian, transgender or queer is to sign up for violence, violence has become synonymous with what it means to experience South Africa. To this extent, without thought, we are forced to participate in the “pornography of violence”. How do we account for this complicity? 
In this seminar Prof Matebeni invites us to ponder the questions “who gets to die and under what conditions? And what does justice look like for such deaths”, a critical analysis and action as a response to Cathy Cohen’s (2012: 129) call to go “beyond the brief memory of the deaths towards a more comprehensive, ongoing and long-lasting analysis of violence”.
