Water Alert: Threats to Limpopo North catchment

Online Research Press Launch event to communicate the existing and pending threats to water resources and supply in the catchment area South Africa shares with neighbouring countries, primarily arising from plans involving perpetuating our dependence on coal. 

A presentation by the author, with animated maps, will provide an overview of water demand and supply challenges in northern Limpopo and analysis of their significance to the prospects for extractive industries that could take water away from households and food production.

The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung commissioned Dr Victor Munnik (who has three decades of experience working on such issues) to research the status of water infrastructure development and the implications of proposals for further extractive development in the area of the Limpopo North water catchment; for example Premier Mathabatha telling an investment conference that water for an Energy and Minerals Special Economic Zone (EMSEZ) will be brought in from Zimbabwe.

This zoom briefing – up to an hour including Q & A – is provided primarily for journalists, such as those covering industrial development, governance of water supply and demand, energy policy, climate change, human rights at household level or international relations. The author will be available in the zoom meeting space until midday for follow-up discussion and interested stakeholder are encouraged to listen in and join discussion following the media briefing.
