What does Social Democracy have to offer today?
Earlier this year, the 2021 cohort had their first virtual module, which included discussions around understanding social democracy broadly and understanding the South African political economy. Ultimately reflecting on questions of justice – what would it take for us to attain justice as one of the most unequal societies in the world. The second edition of our virtual engagements focused on experiences of social democracy elsewhere. More broadly looking at ‘What does Social Democracy have to offer today?’ Module two is the our first physical meeting. The pandemic has limited our ability to meet each other, we are excited to finally get the 2021 cohort in one room. This Module seeks to build on lessons drawn from Module one, to start unpacking more practically how we experience democracy, as well as strengthen it through our active participation. In this module we are particularly concerned with how structural and policy reform interacts with active citizenship, activism and advocacy, all encompassed by the notions of Social democracy in our context as a tool for developing and transforming the economy.
